Maiden Castle House Care Quality Commission

The provider, Care South, had a system in place to monitor the service offered and to make improvements where required. This system was only partially successful at bringing about change at the home as some issues identified as requiring improvement featured on many service checks carried out by the provider. This meant that whilst issues were identified plans had not been put into place to ensure improvements were made. We saw the provider sought the views of family representatives and made changes as a result.

I started at Maiden Castle House as a Care Assistant and gradually gained regular promotions to now being appointed as the Acting Home Manager. I started at Maiden Castle House as a Care Assistant and gradually gained regular promotions to now being appointed as the Home Manager.

To help find the right care home for you, here's some questions you can ask when you enquire. At other times we offer an answer phone service so please leave a message and we'll call you back. We have therefore encouraged every provider to open their ‘online windows and doors’ to help you make an informed choice. The profile score is a measure of how much information has been provided.

Every day I look forward to challenges the day may bring, I have worked here for a third of my life so I am particularly passionate about the home continuing to be as successful as possible. Maiden Castle is one of several hill forts that used to occupy the area, but many are either too small to be clearly seen or have been destroyed over time. The Castle stands alone as the largest and most impressive hill fort in Britain, originally constructed around 600 BC but was not nearly as large or impressive back then.

Inspection ratings

Health care professionals told us staff provided a good level of support and care to people living there. People could be confident their care needs were being met and they were involved in the planning of their care. However some people’s care records required updating to reflect their current needs. Records relating to the care and support people required did not always give staff the information they required to keep people safe and to meet their needs in a consistent manner. We saw evidence in individual care plans and notes of group meetings that the provider respected and involved people.

When they lack mental capacity to take particular decisions, any made on their behalf must be in their best interests and as least restrictive as possible. At our last inspection of Maiden Castle in November 2014 we had concerns that the quality assurance systems were not effective and that peoples’ records were not always accurate and up to date. As well as this we had concerns that the service had not followed correct procedures as required by the Mental Capacity Act and medicines were not always administered appropriately. We found the provider had made improvements since our last inspection in November 2014. Choosing care has been ranked one of life’s most stressful events.

There were two–three social support staff working each day and they planned activities and clubs based on people’s interests and needs. Activities were moved around the home so that people from different areas could participate if they chose to. There were resources available for care staff to utilise when social support staff were not available such as crafts and games. The Mental Capacity Act provides a legal framework for making particular decisions on behalf of people who may lack the mental capacity to do so by themselves. The Act requires that as far as possible people make their own decisions and are helped to do so when needed.

Ratings are provided by Care Quality Commission and reflects the most recent report for this care home, which was published on 13 February 2018. By the time of the Roman occupation, about 43AD, the population of Maiden Castle had dwindled and was focused mainly in the eastern section of the hill top area. A small cemetery on the site indicates that there were at least some inhabitants over the next few hundred years, but the population did not grow by any great number.

Whilst Dorchester may hold many of the same charms of other English towns, it can boast of being the gateway to the largest Iron Age hill fort in Britain. Known as Maiden Castle, this hill fort encompasses an impressive 47 acres just two miles south of Dorchester town centre. The staff and residents will be supporting Ash and Maria in the run up to the run and on the day, and hope that everyone’s friends and family will also support in person and with donations.

If you look carefully whilst you wander on the top of the hill you can make out another area that is thought to be the location of a shrine for the temple. This temple was probably the last great thing to take place at Maiden Hill; from the 4th century on, the site fell into disuse and was resigned to use as pasture or farm land. Although the local area lacked few natural resources to create their own metal, it is thought that there was a great deal of trade amongst the forts and towns of the area. Our wonderful manager, Ash Smith, and fabulous chef, Maria Barnes, have decided to run 100km, yes - 100km!
